Privacy policy

Effective date: [effective date: set on publication]

Unyap is an app that gives you a topic, records you talking about it, and scores how you spoke. This policy explains what the app collects, which companies handle it for us, how long we keep it, and how to delete it.

Who we are

Unyap is run by Airplane Mode, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company ("we" or "us"). Our address for legal notices is c/o our registered agent, 131 Continental Dr, Suite 305, Newark, DE 19713, USA. You can reach us at [email protected].

What we collect

When you sign in:

  • Your email address. You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with your email address and a one-time code we email you.
  • With Sign in with Apple, we ask Apple for your email only, not your name. If you choose Hide My Email, Apple gives us a private relay address instead of your real one. We also keep the user ID Apple gives Unyap, so we can recognize you when you sign in again.
  • With Google, Google shares your email address and basic profile (your name and profile picture) with Clerk. Unyap uses only your email address.
  • With email, you type your email address and enter the code we send to it.
  • A Unyap account ID from Clerk, our sign-in provider. Clerk also keeps basic session details, such as your IP address and device type, to keep your sign-in secure.
  • Your time zone, so we can pick today's topic and date your takes.

When you record a take:

  • The audio recording, as a WAV file.
  • The transcript of what you said, with the time of each word. Your phone makes the transcript with on-device speech recognition, and Unyap only records on phones that can do this.
  • The topic you talked about.
  • Your app version, operating system version and device model, which the app sends with each take. Our server does not store them with the take.
  • Whether you've allowed the microphone and speech recognition, so we can help when recording doesn't work.

When we score a take:

  • Measurements from your recording and transcript, such as its length, your pauses, your filler words and your pace.
  • Your score, the feedback on your take, and your history of takes, including your streak and points.

When you agree to AI scoring:

  • A record of your agreement: which version of the notice you saw, when you agreed, and a fingerprint (hash) of the exact text on screen.

When you subscribe:

  • Your subscription status from Apple: your plan, whether it's active, when it renews or ends, and the transaction ID Apple uses for it. Apple takes the payment, so we never receive your card or bank details.

Unyap doesn't ask for access to your contacts, photos or location. The app has no analytics or advertising software in it.

How we use it

We use your data to run Unyap:

  • to sign you in and keep your account;
  • to score your takes and write your feedback;
  • to show you your results, your history and your recordings;
  • to check that your subscription is active;
  • to limit how many takes an account can send each day;
  • to answer you when you contact support.

Who handles your data for us

We use these companies to run Unyap.

  • Railway hosts our database and your recordings, and runs our server code. Everything we store with Railway is in the United States.
  • Clerk runs sign-in and your account login for us, including Sign in with Apple, Sign in with Google and the email codes. Clerk stores your email address, the user ID Apple or Google gives Unyap if you use them, and your session details. Clerk is in the United States.
  • Anthropic provides the AI that writes your feedback. For each take we send Anthropic the words of your transcript, a list of possible filler words and hedges (like "I think") in it, the topic, and the measurements from your take. We don't send Anthropic your recording or your email address. Anthropic says it deletes API inputs and outputs within 30 days and doesn't use API data to train its models by default.
  • Google provides Sign in with Google, if you choose it. Google tells Clerk your email address and basic profile when you sign in.
  • Apple provides Sign in with Apple, takes subscription payments, and tells our server when your subscription starts, renews, ends or is refunded. Apple's speech recognition runs on your phone, so Unyap doesn't send your audio to Apple to be transcribed.
  • Superwall shows the subscription screen in the app and runs the purchase on your phone. We give Superwall your Unyap account ID so the purchase links to your account.

AI scoring and your consent

Before your first take, the app tells you that your recording and transcript go to our server and that AI writes your feedback, and asks you to agree. If you don't agree, recording stays off. If we change which company provides the AI or how speech is transcribed, the app asks you again.

Where your data is stored and how it's protected

Your account and recordings are stored in the United States, with Railway and Clerk. We are a US company, and the other companies listed above may also handle your data in the United States.

We keep recordings in private storage. The app never reads our database or storage directly: every request goes through our server, which checks that it comes from your signed-in account and returns only your own recordings and records. The app uploads and plays recordings through short-lived signed links from our server. Data moves between the app and our server over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

How long we keep it

We keep your data for as long as you have an account.

A take you haven't sent yet stays on your phone until you send it or discard it. Discarding deletes it from the phone.

When you delete your account, we delete your data as described in the next section. Railway keeps backups of our database [backup schedule and retention: set when Railway backups are configured]. Deleted database records may remain in those backups until they roll off. Recordings are stored separately and are not in database backups.

We delete subscription notices linked to your account when you delete it. We keep the original transaction ID to prevent a deleted subscription from being linked to another account. If Apple sends another notice after deletion, we store it as an orphaned billing record. These records hold purchase details, not your recordings, transcripts or scores. Apple keeps its own purchase records under its terms, and deleting your Unyap account doesn't remove them.

Deleting your account

In the app, go to Settings > Delete account and confirm. If you signed in with Apple, you also sign in with Apple once more. This:

  • deletes your recordings, transcripts, scores, feedback and history from our server;
  • deletes your account and your consent records, and deletes your account with Clerk;
  • stops any take that is still being scored;
  • if you signed in with Apple, asks Apple to remove Unyap's access through Sign in with Apple; account deletion continues if that request fails;
  • deletes takes still waiting on that phone.

Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription. Cancel it in Manage Subscription first if you want to stop being charged.

Tracking, ads and selling data

Unyap doesn't track you across other companies' apps or websites and shows no ads. We don't sell your personal data.

Children

Unyap is for people 13 and older. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If we learn that a child under 13 has used Unyap, we will delete their account and data. If you think this has happened, email [email protected].

Your choices

  • You can see your takes, scores and feedback in the app.
  • You can turn off microphone or speech recognition access in your phone's Settings. Unyap can't record without them.
  • You can delete your account and data at any time in Settings.
  • You can email us with questions about your data, or to ask for a copy of it.

Our website

The theunyap.app website has no analytics, no cookies and no third-party scripts.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change affects what we send for AI scoring or who processes it, the app asks for your agreement again before your next take.
